I was looking through some of my old vacation albums, I realized one of two things. One, I take way too many pictures of the ocean. And two, because of this, I have so many pictures of ocean sunsets (my absolute favorite). So I figured I would share with you some of my favorite beach sunsets from a few different places.
5. Cayman Islands 2010
While I wouldn’t say that this was the best vacation I’ve ever been on (ended up in the hospital on New Years Day), but the sights and the beaches were absolutely beautiful. I swear the sunsets each night made up for the fact that I was short of breath and had a hospital bracelet tan on my wrist.
4. Shark Bay, Western Australia 2011
My trip abroad to Australia was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I never wanted to leave, but unfortunately, I had to come home and be a real person. While abroad, the University I was studying at took us on a trip through the North West, and Shark Bay was one of our first stops. It is here that we encountered the oldest known fossils on the planet: Stromatolites. They really just looked like plain old rocks (old as in, 3 billion years), but they are believed to be the main reason that there is oxygen on Earth. It was such a gorgeous and peaceful sight. If you are ever on the Western coast of Australia, they are definitely a must-see.
3. Cottesloe Beach in Fremantle, Western Australia 2011
Probably my favorite beach in all of Perth was Cott Beach. It was located just a short train ride from the cute little town of Fremantle (Freo). This beach was home for many of us Americans during our stay in Perth. Friendships were born, tans were darkened, hangovers were slept off, and amazing memories were had.
2. Coral Bay, Western Australia 2001
As you can tell, most of my favorite beaches are in Australia. They have soft, white sand and clean, turquoise waters that could calm any anxiety. Coral Bay was also along our Northwestern trip, where we stopped to see the gorgeous beach and go snorkeling/scuba diving. It was here that I was able to dive through the most colorful reef in the world, Ningaloo Reef. Stingrays swam up to our feet and whale sharks calmly glided just a few meters away. It had to be one of the most amazing trips of my life.
1. Sunrise from Mount Batur in Bali, Indonesia
While the quality of this picture is a little iffy, I can tell you that the actual sight was breathtaking. On our last day in Bali, Indonesia, we were awoken at 3am to embark on an hour long drive to the foot of the active volcano, Mt. Bantur. Once we arrived and had a small cup of instant coffee, the trek began. Mind you, this was not for the weak. After about an hour and a half, I was basically being dragged up by a young Balinese man who walks the volcano every morning. The sweat, brief tears, and excruciatingly sore muscles the next week were definitely worth it. Once at the top, we had eggs cooked by the steam of the volcano and watched the sun rise over the mountains. In all my 22 years, I have never seen a sight more beautiful and worth the steep hike. It was the best ending to a fantastic trip.
