Now Playing: Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi

I have always been a fan of rap and r&b, but the top 40 type just isn’t my thing.  Kid Cudi is not like other hip hop artists; he refers to his music as alternative hip hop, and that’s exactly what it is.  He doesn’t walk around in thick furs, diamond encrusted everything and a attitude that makes you want to punch him in his face.  His music and his attitude are real.  He doesn’t rap about f*cking bitches, video hoes or how much more money he makes than you (cue Chris Brown dig).  I knew this from the second I heard him for the first time singing The Prayer, which is rework of Band of Horses’ The Funeral.

If I slip away, if I die today the last thing you remember won’t
Be about some apple bottom jeans with the boots with the fur

He tells you straight up that he’s not like other “artists”, like T-Pain who sing about stuff that doesn’t matter.  Sure those songs may be fun to dance with, but they don’t truly mean anything.  It is filler music.  It takes you away from reality for 3 minutes and helps a talentless person make millions.  Cudi’s music makes you think.  His lyrics delve deep into his dark past and he doesn’t hide anything.  In his Soundtrack 2 My Life he raps about his struggles with depression and insomnia, as he does in many of his other songs.  What struck me most were his lines:

I tried to think about myself as a sacrifice
Just to show the kids they ain’t the only ones who up at night

He notes that he is using his words and beats to let you know that you’re not alone.  That is something that I can appreciate, because I know that at one time of another, I have felt alone in many of my own struggles.  You hear about children everyday dealing with their own issues who resolve to doing drugs or harming themselves because they see no other way out.  I know that Kid Cudi isn’t going to save all of these children, nor is that his intention, but I appreciate the fact that he doesn’t let it go unnoticed.

He doesn’t pretend he has the best life ever because he’s making money and getting laid, because those things aren’t what make you happy.  His music brings him to life and lets him truly feel.  That’s what makes him unique and one of my favorite artists.

I’m on the pursuit of happiness and I know
Everything that shines ain’t always gonna be gold
